Neil Walker led off in the 10th inning with a home run off of pitcher Carlos Villanueva to beat the Cubs 1-0 Tuesday night at PNC Park. It was Walkers first walk-off of his career and the it the first for the Pirates on opening day since Bob Bailey homered off San Francisco’s Juan Marichal in a 1-0, 10-inning victory in 1965.
”This one feels pretty special,” Walker said. ”This is a special day for this team, this organization. We’ve come a long way.”
Before the game, former Pirate Barry Bonds presented centerfielder Andrew McCutchen with the NL MVP award that McCutchen earned last year. The Cubbies will have two more opportunities against the Pirates as they play on Wednesday and Thursday.
Be sure to get your tickets to the next Cubs home game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday. Great seats are still available.
When Theo Epstein took over as President of Baseball Operations in 2011, he knew that it would take some time to rebuild the Cubs into a franchise that fans would be proud of. Fast forward three seasons and the former Executive of the Decade (from his time with the Boston Red Sox) is beginning to feel the frustration and heat from fans.
“We feel the same frustration,” Epstein said. “But I think I’d be really compromising the organization if we decided just because we were frustrated and people around us were frustrated that we would scrap the plan and try to add some things cosmetically to make it look better than it really is. There’s a really high bar we’re aiming for and we know we’re going to get there and it’s going to be sustainable.”
Be sure to get your tickets and support your Chicago Cubs as they try and win the NL Central in 2014.
We would like to help you see the Cubs in person. The place we would recommend checking out for to get those hard to get tickets is: Prime Tickets . Yes everyone likes to see a winning team, but going to the game is really more about “BEING THERE”. Did your parents ever take you to a live professional baseball game? Did you ever take your kids? You know there is nothing better than being there!
